About This Place

Nestled in the heart of South Portland, Maine, Taco Trio serves up vibrant, authentic Mexican and Latin American flavors that transport you straight to the streets of Mexico. This intimate yet lively eatery at 119 Ocean St invites taco lovers and food enthusiasts alike to savor an impressive lineup of traditional dishes crafted with care and bursting with bold, fresh ingredients.

The star of the menu is undoubtedly the Trio of Tacos, a perfect sampler paired with house-made salsas that span the spectrum from smoky to fiery, empowering each bite with layers of depth. Whether you favor the Pollo Asado—grilled marinated chicken tender and smoky—or the tender, pineapple-kissed Al Pastor, each taco bursts with authentic flavor. The Fish Tacos featuring beer-battered haddock draped in crisp cabbage slaw and lime crema offer a delightful contrast of textures and a refreshing zest, while the Barbacoa tacos deliver a rich, slow-cooked melt-in-your-mouth experience that delightfully surprised patrons like Betty Rodriguez.

Beyond tacos, the menu dazzles with choices like the Carne Asada Quesadilla, loaded with juicy grilled steak, and vegetarian options such as the Quesadilla de Vegetales Asados, showcasing roasted zucchini, squash, peppers, and red onion that emit a smoky sweetness. Sides like the freshly made guacamole, crunchy tortilla chips, and flavorful rice and beans round out the meal brilliantly, offering well-balanced accompaniments.

The dining atmosphere at Taco Trio is refreshingly authentic and inviting. According to longtime visitors and newcomers alike, the setting blends a warm ambiance with an energizing soundtrack of traditional Mexican music, making every visit feel like a festive occasion. Its cozy indoor space is complemented by a pleasant outdoor seating area, perfect for enjoying a sunny Maine day with a Mezcal Margarita or a cold craft beer in hand. As Debra Souto notes, the friendly staff and self-serve salsa bar elevate the experience, encouraging guests to tailor their meals to their preferred heat level and flavors.

What really sets Taco Trio apart is its ability to resonate with true aficionados. Houston and Los Angeles transplants, as well as local enthusiasts, have all hailed it as a culinary gem—many expressing surprise and joy at the authenticity and explosive flavors. Kathleen Miller sums it up perfectly: the restaurant brilliantly captures the essence of Mexican street food, bringing a taste of her Texas roots to Maine with flair and heart.

In sum, Taco Trio offers a compelling combination of genuine Mexican flavors, diverse menu options, and an atmosphere that feels both lively and welcoming. Whether you’re craving classic pork carnitas, an adventurous goat barbacoa taco, or a comforting plate of chicken enchiladas verdes, this South Portland gem is a must-visit for anyone passionate about bold, authentic Latin American cuisine.

First time at Taco Trio. Nice ambiance. The music was awesomely authentic! Being from TX we of course know Mexican cuisine. Good spicy margaritas. We were surprised to find goat barbacoa tacos which my husband enjoyed.

Y’all…. This is the best taco place hands down. I moved here from Houston and the only thing i miss from that dump is their tacos. This place? AMAZING. I absolutely love their chicken taco trio and their array of spicy authentic sauces. Come here and have their tacos!!! I can only wish they had a place in Portland!!!

I live much of the year in Los Angeles, 2 hours from my the Mexican border. Your restaurant is better than all the Mexican ones in L A. They should close up shop. Your food is supreme. Your pequeno bar esta fantastico. Y yo soy Italiano. Congratulations. Keep going.

The food was amazing! Love the help yourself salsa and condiment bar. It is counter service so you have to be in the mood for that. I suggest getting the Cadillac Margarita if you like to taste a little tequila as the others are in a tall glass so lots of mix. Everyone in the place so friendly.

Nice selection of tacos, burritos, enchiladas, etc. They have a salsa bar. It’s a relatively small restaurant, but has nice outdoor seating. Really nice bathroom.

Hidden Gem in Downtown SoPo A cozy little eat-in spot that packs a flavorful punch. I went for the Pollo Asada burrito—generous in size and worth every penny. It came with tortilla chips and access to the salsa bar, where I chose a green chile and a mango salsa. That mango salsa? Absolutely addictive. Washed it all down with a bottle of fruit punch Jarritos. Great food, relaxed vibe, and I’ll definitely be back.

A great little taco joint. Delicious food for a decent price (great price during happy hour) served quickly with bar full of salsas to choose from. Its a tiny dining room packed full of character. Outdoor seating is available in the summer. Staff is phenomenal. If you're a drinker, try the spicy margaritas! Would recommend.
